Elements and Principles

Description - This activity was a scavenger hunt. I had to go around and find all of the elements and principles in art. The pictures could be taken anywhere and were supposed to represent one of the elements or principles. After I took all of my pictures, I put them into a presentation for 3rd to 5th grade students. In the presentation, I included my picture with an age-appropriate definition of that element or principle. The top left picture is a picture that represents contrast. It shows the contrast between the light coming in through the window and the darkness of the rest of the room. The top right picture represents unity. It uses many shapes and shades of blue in order to create unity. The middle picture represents shapes. It shows how shapes can be organic or geometric through the use of triangles and nontraditional shapes. The bottom left picture represents space. This picture shows width, length, and depth through the angle the picture was taken and the light at the end of the hallway. The bottom right picture represents movement through the picture being taken while we were jumping. The blurriness of the photograph shows movement as well.

Extension Activity - An extension project that I could create to help teach emphasis is to make an art project using the first letter of their names. The students will take the first letter of their names and draw bubble letters of that letter all over their paper. Once they have filled up the space with several different sizes of their letter. They will color in of the letters a color of their choice. They should pick a letter that is not just in the center of the paper. This will show the students how you can have the same things around each other, but when you change one of them to be different, it adds emphasis to that one piece.
